On Tuesday, two officers shot and killed a black male in a convenience store parking lot. The man had just stolen energy drinks and other small items. The store clerk called the police and the man waited. According to the police, the man held a knife in an overhand position and charged at the officers yelling “kill me now.” The officers reported they instructed the man to put the weapon down. The suspect did not comply and kept charging at them, said two St. Louis police officers.
The black male came within a few feet, which prompted the officers to shoot the suspect.
However, the video you are about to watch tells a completely different story. The video is very graphic – viewer discretion is advised.
As you can plainly see, the officer’s version of what happened is quite different from the reality. However, the police are the ones that released this video in an effort to be more “transparent.” I’m sure the events that unfolded in Ferguson, MO when Michael Brown was killed played a large role in that decision.
But, I’d also like to point out a few things about the video that really pisses me off. The man was shot 12-15 times in total. He began dropping limp to the ground after the 4th shot. One officer fired 2 shots by himself, then the other officer began firing and they shot together another 4 times. After the suspect was already on the ground, the officers shot at least 6 more rounds, two of which were completely unnecessary as it was very clear the man would not get back up.
Then, if shooting this man more than 12 times wasn’t enough, they then handcuffed him. Yes, the guy flopped over for a moment or two, but was clearly dead after 10 seconds or so following the shooting. What in the hell did they need to handcuff this man who either 1) is dead or 2) obviously needed to remain in that position while paramedics arrived on the scene.
This is the kind of brutality the people in Ferguson are tired of. The extra 6 bullets being pumped into the guy that was just shot about 10 times was unnecessary and served only the purpose of releasing rage from within the officers. And then two more shots while on the ground? Seriously?
I don’t blame the officers for having used their firearms. But the objective of the officer should be to subdue at all cost. They have mace, they have tasers, and they are supposed to be trained in disarming people (and if they aren’t they should be). I know I’m in no position to assume what was going through their heads, but I know what I saw and what I saw was unnecessary use of force.
As for the victim, it appears to me the dead guy either 1) wanted to commit suicide, 2) wanted to show exactly how cops react to such things, or perhaps both. Unfortunately for the rest of the black community, his actions only add to police officers’ fears of black people in general. His attempt to do . . . whatever he was trying to do, backfired completely. If he didn’t have the knife in his hand, the cops would never have been justified in what happened. But, I guess he wanted to force the hand of the police to make a statement. He did but not the one he wanted I’m sure.
Also, the officers flat-out lied in their initial statement. You and I know that officers will lie, but courts actually use police testimony as evidence in trial; how can this be so when officers will flat-out lie just to serve their own personal needs. This whole incident is disgusting, and the officers should be fired, not for killing the man or using their weapons, but for continuing to pump bullets into him after he was no longer a threat to them. Also, they should be fired for lying in their initial report of what happened.
