If we never stand up for the things we believe in, talk about, argue about, and preach about, then what is the point? I asked myself this question tonight. Actually, it was an argument I had with my wife. You see, I often make decisions that are sometimes bad for our family’s financial status. But, what is life without our ability to stand against things we disagree with?
What would our country be like had Martin Luther King Jr. not stood up against the oppression of blacks? It’s safe to say that MLKj knew he would be harmed, killed, or destroyed financially, but he pressed on. His life was ended, but his message remains. MLKj is just one example of many individuals who have stood up for something they believed in, even when doing so is detrimental to those.
If you find yourself taking passionate stances against certain things like employer abuse, discrimination, unequal and unfair treatment, or any number of things, then you really need to back those stances with action. If you disagree with discrimination, yet it happens at your job, will you stand for the person being discriminated against? If you don’t, then why take a stance at all? Why have passionate discussion if you’re not willing to fight for those things you believe are right.
This is a very important topic in today’s society because time and time again we see police mistreating citizens, we see employers mistreating employees, and we even see our current President, and the Presidents before him, trampling on our Constitutional rights. This means if you play the ‘coward’ you will be forced in to conformity. And for what reason? So that you can buy that car? So that you can pay for that loan? So that you can maintain some semblance of “normalcy”?
Well let me tell you something, when we are all backed into that cage, we will then realize why we should have said something but guess what — by then it will be too late and the battle will be harder and even more deadly.
This is why we need to stand up when we see injustice. We must speak out for those unwilling to speak for themselves. We need to show people that remaining silent gets us nowhere. We must build pride in this country and we must do it today. Waiting for something to change while continuing apace will result in sore disappointment. So do not remain silent. Speak up. Tell that boss to go where he needs to go. Fight against oppression. Fight against injustice. Fight for your beliefs. To not is to condone the injustice.
