In 1948, the UN created an area we know as Israel. Ever since then, there has been war in the Middle-East. Most Americans believe Israel is in the right while the Palestinians and surrounding nations are in the wrong. I believe something quite different.
Jews left Israel some 2,000 years ago. They migrated (which was normal for Jews as they were a nomadic people) to other countries and settled mainly in Europe. From then until around 1912, Jews stayed where they were and seemed content – until the rise of Zionist beliefs.
Zionism is simply the view that Jews deserve a rightful homeland as they were persecuted wherever they went. This movement became popular just before the turn of the 20th century and thousands of Jews migrated to the region known as Palestine. It is there that they set up camp, and began fighting for their right to establish a nation in Palestine.
After the Holocaust, many people felt bad for Jews, including those holding seats on the UN council. Because of this sympathy, they opted to establish the Nation of Israel. Many military generals warned against this; their reasoning was based on religious violence breaking out given that Palestinian land was taken (55% in fact) and given to people of a different religion. That’s exactly what happened.
Palestinians fought against Israel (and rightly so). However, Israel was backed by many wealthy nations including the US. Given weaponry and training, Israel began to dominate the area. Since this transfer of power, Israel has been violent towards Palestinians and commit atrocious acts on a near daily basis.
Israel has enslaved many Palestinians. They often take bulldozers to houses, stop water from flowing to those that need it, and even prevent food from being available. There are checkpoints set up throughout many areas of Palestinian land and Palestinians are murdered by Israelis at these checkpoints.
Many people see Israel as a nation that needs to be left alone, but the reality of it is they need to leave as they are not wanted there, will never be welcome there, and the violence will simply go on. For those in favor of Israel, I ask you this: If the Native Americans wanted their land back, would you give it to them? If Native Americans created large military forces and began attacking those Americans surrounding the Native lands, would you back them? If you answered no to either of these questions, then there is no reason you should be backing Israel.
